The big change in the preface is that the cafeaulait mailing list has moved. It's now called cal (because the listmaster doesn't like to type long list names) and is available from listproc@listserv.oit.unc.edu. To subscribe send email to listproc@listserv.oit.unc.edu with the line

in the body of your message. The first issue includes a long look at why (not how) Java and C++ are very, very different, based on the revelations about the genesis of C++ in Bjarne Stroustrup's The Design and Evolution of C++.
