REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD) Unmoderated group comp.lang.java.corba This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) for the creation of the unmoderated Usenet newsgroup comp.lang.java.corba. This is not a Call For Votes (CFV); you cannot vote at this time. Procedural details are below. Newsgroup lines: comp.lang.java.corba Topics relating to Java and CORBA RATIONALE: comp.lang.java.corba Since the CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) standard was established by the OMG (Object Management Group), it has attracted much attention in the computer industry at large. More recently, Java implementations of CORBA technology have become prominent. Sun has integrated CORBA support into its Java Developer's Kit, and Netscape has included Java-specific support for CORBA into its web browser. There are now over 10 different Java-based ORBs, including both commercial and freeware products, and CORBA support is being integrated into Java development toolkits. Sun, Netscape, IBM, and Oracle recently announced plans to integrate Java more closely with CORBA through the JavaBeans architecture. Sun also announced that RMI would be implemented with support for IIOP to make RMI interoperable with CORBA-based distributed object tools. All these public attention has sparked increased discussion of Java and CORBA. General CORBA mailing lists such as CORBA-dev, dist-object, IDL-users, and ILU frequently carry discussions of Java issues. The OMG also maintains mailing lists about Java and CORBA, but they are available only to OMG members. The Java Developer's Journal has a monthly column called "CORBAcorner," and recently several best-selling books have been published on this topic, such as Orfali's "Client/Server Programming with Java and CORBA." In addition, there are many posts in comp.object.corba and in the comp.lang.java hierarchy regarding Java-CORBA issues. Since there is no CORBA specific Java newsgroup, many users are unsure about the best place to post their messages about Java and CORBA; this frequently results in problems with cross-posting. Comp.lang.java.corba would create a clear forum for the discussion of topics related both to Java and to CORBA. CHARTER: comp.lang.java.corba This unmoderated group is for aspects of Java technology that are related to CORBA software development, products, and standards. Possible discussion topics include: * Questions about Java and CORBA * Announcements of new products and services * General Programming issues in Java and CORBA * Design patterns related to Java/CORBA * Discussion of OMG standards related to Java * Recommendations and reviews of products, services, books and tutorials * Comparisons to other technologies END CHARTER PROCEDURE: This is a request for discussion, not a call for votes. In this phase of the process, any potential problems with the proposed newsgroup should be raised and resolved. The discussion period will continue for a minimum of 21 days (starting from when the first RFD for this proposal is posted to news.announce.newgroups), after which a Call For Votes (CFV) may be posted by a neutral vote taker if the discussion warrants it. Please do not attempt to vote until this happens. All discussion of this proposal should be posted to news.groups. This RFD attempts to fully comply with the Usenet newsgroup creation guidelines outlined in "How to Create a New Usenet Newsgroup" and "how to Format and Submit a New Group Proposal". Please refer to these documents (available in news.announce.newgroups) if you have any questions about the process.
