The Java Media Framework

The Java Media Framework is a standard extension to Java 1.2 that provides much more powerful support for multimedia including timing, sound, animation, and video. JMF 2.0 will add sound input, text-to-speech, speech recognition, and more. (2.0 is still in an active state of development, and details are subject to change.) It will probably be rolled into the core API sometime after 1.2.
