Sun has released version 1.4.2_08 of the Java 2 Software Development Kit and JRE 1.4 and 1.5.0_03 of the Java 2 Software Development Kit and JRE 1.5 These versions plug two major security holes, as well as fixing a few dozen other assorted bugs. All users are strongly encouraged to update. It's available for Windows, Linux, and Solaris.


The Jakarta Apache Project has released Commons Lang 2.1, a "a host of helper utilities for the java.lang API, notably String manipulation methods, basic numerical methods, object reflection, creation and serialization, and System properties. Additionally it contains an inheritable enum type, an exception structure that supports multiple types of nested-Exceptions, basic enhancements to java.util.Date and a series of utlities dedicated to help with building methods, such as hashCode, toString and equals." A few classes and methods have changed in incompatible ways, so read the release notes before upgrading. There's a lot of good stuff here. Everyone should check it out, at least for the ideas even if you don't want to use the library.
